Frequently Asked Questions

General

When is the deadline for application?
We do not have a strict deadline for applications.  However, once we accept our maximum number, we then decline further applications.  To increase your chances of being accepted into the program, we recommend that you apply as early as possible.  If you need a visa, we recommend that you apply at least three months before the start of the program, since the visa procedure can take many months in some instances.

Which documents do I have to supply with my application?
After filling out the online application form, you will have to send us a resume or curriculum vitae by email, as well as a copy of your TOEFL results or a reference letter regarding your English language skills.  After we have received all these documents, we will start reviewing your application.

When will I know if I am accepted in the program?
After we have received all the necessary documents, we will try to let you know within two weeks whether you are accepted into the program.

Do I need to bring my laptop?
It is not obligatory to bring a laptop.  However, if you have one, we highly recommend you to bring it with you since public access to computers is limited.

What is the dress code for the program?
The dress code for the lectures is casual.  For professional activities the dress code is business.  There may be one or two events where formal attire is recommended.

Tuition for the program is $2,995.

Course materials as well as a number of professional and social activities are included in the price.

Does the Institute for U.S. Law provide scholarships?
IUSLAW provides a limited number of partial need-based tuition scholarships.  The amount of the scholarship depends on the relative financial need of the participant.  Our ability to award scholarships is very limited, so we encourage you to seek other funding sources to support your participation.  You may wish to seek sponsorship from, for example, your employer, your government or from foundations.

Is there a deadline to apply for a scholarship?
The deadline to apply for a need-based scholarship is May 1.

How can I make the payment?
Tuition payments should be made by wire transfer to IUSLAW's account. Housing payments are made directly to the corporate apartment building via credit card.

Career Assistance

Does the Institute for U.S. Law offer any form of career assistance?
The Institute's career development professionals can assist participants in finding suitable internships or other positions upon successful completion of the Introduction to U.S. Law program.  Internship availability is limited and will depend in part on a participant’s qualifications and visa status.  Career counselors are available to work with students during the program (July/August) and thereafter.  Any participant interested in pursuing an internship following the U.S. Legal Methods program should indicate this on his or her Application Form (in the Personal Statement section).

Bar Exam

Will IUSLAW’s summer program prepare me for the bar exam?
For participants wishing to eventually take a state bar exam in the United States, “U.S. Legal Methods: Introduction to U.S. Law” should be their first and most useful educational program.  After the program, students may have the opportunity to stay in the U.S. for an extra few months and take additional bar preparation courses at law schools with which IUSLAW cooperates, or to follow the standard route and pursue an LL.M. at a leading U.S. law school.  Although the IUSLAW summer program is a very useful step in the bar preparation process, additional course work is generally required before foreign lawyers will be able to take a state bar exam in the United States.
