Alternative Dispute Resolution
Two-Part Seminar Part 1: August 5 - 8, 2012 (live on-site); Washington, D.C. Part 2: Provided online via internet streaming video 'on demand.'
This seminar familiarizes participants with alternative methods of dispute resolution (ADR) -- negotiations, mediation and arbitration.
The seminar approaches mediation and conflict management as a way of avoiding or resolving litigation and of addressing relationships in business with employees, customers and suppliers. It is designed to provide the necessary background, structures, and tools for successful mediation, while also considering negotiation as a separate mode of conflict resolution. In addition to the training sessions, this part of the seminar will include a visit to a local mediation center.
Next, the seminar examines the legal issues and processes involved in arbitration -- domestic aribitration, international commercial arbitration, and international investment arbitration. It will distinguish between the various types of arbitration and the rules, procedures and other considerations unique to each. A visit to the International Centre for the Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) at the World Bank is also planned.
The entire seminar will be led by experienced and respected mediation and arbitration professionals, including senior lawyers from Shearman & Sterling and other firms, government-affiliated ADR lawyers, faculty from George Washington University Law Center, as well as senior Court-apppointed mediators and representatives from the American Arbitrtion Association.
Note that the seminar will be conducted in two parts: First, the "on-site/live" component will be conducted at the George Washington University Law School and other relevant venues in Washington, D.C. between August 5 - 8, 2012. Second, these initial days of lectures and visits will be supplemented with approximately 10 hours of online presentations over the following weeks delivered via internet streaming video to wherever in the world registrants reside. A certificate will be granted to participants who successfully complete the entire program.
